BDN IT Self Assessment – Is Your Business at Risk?

IT Self-Assessment: People, Process, Technology

  • 1: Technology

    • a) Do you wonder if you have the right software, hardware and network for your business? Are you spending too much time doing manually-intensive, repetitive tasks? Do you hear "there's got to be an easier way!" more than a few times a week?

    • b) Is your technology falling behind? Do service interruptions seem to happen too often and at the worst times, causing missed commitments?

    • c) Have you wondered about innovations like cloud-based computing and mobile workforce? Could process automation streamline manually-intensive work?

    • d) Could your customers' / partners' confidence be improved by modernizing your systems? As well as your employees?

    • e) Are your telecom connections to the outside world reliable? Are they speedy and responsive? What about cost?
  • 2: IT Processes

    • a) Is getting new employees set up with equipment, mail, etc. a headache? How about when they exit the organization?

    • b) Do you have backups of your critical data? What about laptops and workstations? Have you proven the backups work?

    • c) Are your computers up to date with the latest updates? Software updates are your first defense against malware and ransomware, yet they're often neglected.

    • d) Are you ready to move to something new? A new telecom vendor? New software? But you don't have the time to even consider it?

    • e) Have you had your business evaluated for security vulnerabilities and risks? Have you experienced a hacking incident (ransomware, data breach, etc.)?
  • 3: People

    • a) Many smaller businesses can't afford to have one or more people focused solely on IT, so the burden falls on staff who take care of it in their "spare time". Do the people running your systems have the right skills? Could they use a little help?

    • b) Maybe you have highly motivated people taking care of IT. Do they just need some coaching and mentoring to help them make the right decisions?

    • c) Can your key employees work from home or on the road effectively when the need arises? Is it chaotic when they're out of the office unexpectedly?

    • d) Are your systems well-documented? If key people left, would you be vulnerable to disruptions while someone figures out what needs to be done?
  • e) Are your staff members able to distinguish between legitimate and malicious email? Can they recognize when a link in an email or on the web is dangerous?
